Travis, son of the late Clarence and Margaret Galloway, was born March 15, 1941, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Travis attended Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas prior to the historic “lost year” when the governor closed the school to all students. Instead of attending his senior year, Travis continued to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas and earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Travis’s lifelong love for education drove him to earn three masters degrees: Master Science in Chemical Engineering, Rice University in Houston, Texas; Master of Business Administration, University of Arkansas in Little Rock, Arkansas; and Master of Engineering Management, Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Travis enjoyed his career as a Chemical Engineer working at Reynolds Metals Company and Century Aluminum. His career gave him the opportunity to travel throughout the world to various Aluminum sites. Travis looked forward to preparing for business trips by learning the local languages; he especially strived to learn business Japanese and French. Travis furthered his passion for engineering by serving as editor for an industry publication: Light Metals 2006. He was also an active member of The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS) as a TMS Subject Chair and Session Chair for Alumina and Bauxite and as a member of the TMS Aluminum Committee.
On August 1, 1987, he married Barbara Ellen Porter in Corpus Christi, Texas. Last year, the couple celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary. The couple, along with their daughter Julie Courtney Galloway, traveled and moved throughout the country and world together; living in Texas, Australia, Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana.
Upon retirement, Travis and his wife Barbara moved back to Texas and settled in San Antonio. Travis helped tutor local youth in science and math in San Antonio area high schools. He also enjoyed attending University of Arkansas Alumni football watch parties to cheer on the Razorbacks. Additionally, he was a member of University United Methodist Church.
Friends and family appreciated Travis’s continued thirst for knowledge, down to earth demeanor, quick wit, and willingness to provide a helping hand without expectation of recognition. Travis enjoyed music and could be heard playing guitar, attending concerts, or listening to albums of classic country, bluegrass, blues, jazz, and classical music.
Travis touched the lives of everyone who met him and will be missed by many. Survivors include his wife of 29 years Barbara Ellen Galloway, San Antonio, Texas and daughter Julie Courtney Galloway, Richmond, Virginia.
Funeral Services and visitation will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Sunset North Funeral Home. Rev. Holly Wilson of University United Methodist Church will officiate the service. Friend and colleague Jack Gates will be providing the eulogy.
Memorials may be made in Travis’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
