

LTC Walter R. Griffith, U.S. Air Force Reserves (Ret), born on November 19, 1922, in O'Neill, Nebraska, passed away on October 25, 2012, at the age of 89. After graduating from high school in 1940, he entered Kearney State Teachers' College. He left college in 1942, enlisting in the Air Force at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, where he met and married Sylvia Gawlik, his wife of 65 years. He became a pilot and was stationed in Texas, France and Germany. He left the Air Force and entered Texas A&M, where he received a degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1949. As a result of the Korean conflict, he was recalled into the military and sent to Rhein-Main AFB, Germany.
Upon returning from service he joined the Texas Air National Guard, retiring after 22 years of service. During this time, Walter joined City Public Service as an engineer and became head of the gas meter department. Walter was an active member of the Catholic Church. He was a founding member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and St. Matthew's Catholic Church. He was involved with Boy Scouts of America, serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 286 (St. Gregory's). Walter was a member of the Professional Engineers of Texas. He was active in the San Antonio A&M Club, where he served several years as the club's Scholarship Administrator.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ruth Griffith and his sister, Opal Calloway. He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Gawlik Griffith; brother, Darrel Griffith; his children, Gary L. Griffith and wife Shari; Gregory D. Griffith; and Linda G. Speights. He is also survived by grandchildren, Anna Griffith, Chad Griffith, Michael Marshall, Sarah Speights, Benjamin Griffith, Isabelle Griffith and Bianca Griffith; and great-granddaughter, Keira Griffith.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 28, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at
Porter Loring North on1604.
