Elias, known as Lee to many, was born on December 21, 1947 in Eagle Pass, TX to Anastacia and Nicasio Campos. He was the third youngest of eight children and grew up in Gilroy, California. He was a hard worker from a young age and selflessly joined the U.S. Army at the age of eighteen in 1966 in Houston, TX.
Elias met Amelia Trevino in San Antonio in 1969. They were married in November 1969 and traveled the world together while Elias served in the military. They lived in Germany, Colorado Springs, Korea Monterey, CA, Alabama, Kansas and retired from the US Army at Fort Hood, Texas in 1986. Elias was proud to have served in the Vietnam War and retired as an Army Master Sergeant after 20 years of service. His highest war medal earned was the Bronze Star in Vietnam in 1968. Amelia and Lee had many fun and exciting adventures abroad before returning to San Antonio in 1986. Lee graduated with an Associates in Body Mechanics from St. Phillips College. Amelia and Elias have two children, Jacob Campos and Dr. Zachary Campos, and celebrated 53 years of marriage this past November.
Elias had what we like to call “dad strength” and loved teaching his sons about life, sports, and perseverance. His boys were the apple of his eye and he was so proud to be an Aggie Dad. He was so happy to see them grow up to be the men they are today. After the military, Elias worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 10 years before retiring. He had a green thumb and loved growing fruit in their backyard. He enjoyed working on his 1955 first series Chevrolet pickup truck, listening to Tejano music, watching cowboy movies and sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas A&M Aggies, and the San Antonio Spurs.
Lee had a love of food, especially strawberries, strawberry ice cream, tacos, Whataburger, and sweets. He was known by his kids for making the best chocolate chip oatmeal cookies and bbq. He enjoyed grilling, but sometimes got impatient and utilized a flame thrower he constructed to speed up the process. He was a man of few words, but he sure did know how to make people laugh and smile. The nurses at dialysis always loved him for his humor. His family and friends will remember him as a man who was full of surprises, would do anything for people he cared about, and someone who would never give up.
Elias is survived by his beloved wife, Amelia Trevino Campos, sons, Jacob Campos and Dr. Zachary Campos, daughter-in-laws, Sarah Cole and Stephanie Hall Campos, brothers Adolfo Campos, Ruben Campos, Gilbert Campos, and Nicasio Campos, Jr., and many other nieces, nephews, and friends who he loved. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Nicasio and Anastacia Campos, sisters Lydia Orozco and Olga Pullido, and brother Bobby Campos.
A very Special Thank You to the Doctors, Nurses at the VA, SAMC, Doctors and Staff at Davita and VITAS Hospices for the exceptional care they provided to Elias (Lee).
