Valerie Anne Amos passed away Monday, October 2, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. Valerie was born July 29, 1959, to Katherine and William Bennett in Portland, Oregon. She was the eldest of three daughters; Michelle and Yvonne are her younger sisters. Valerie moved with her mother and sisters to Albuquerque, New Mexico in the early 1970s and she spent her childhood surrounded by mesas and mountains.
After graduating high school, Valerie pursued an engineering degree at the University of New Mexico. She was one of only a handful of women to do so at the time. She rushed and pledged Chi Omega sorority. After her freshman year at college, she married Kevin Amos and embraced being a Navy wife. Together, she and Kevin lived nationally and internationally. In 1985, Valerie became a mother – what she would always say was “the best thing she ever did.” She gave birth to twins, Nathaniel and Vanessa. She cherished her time with them throughout her life.
Valerie excelled at making friends and created a home wherever she landed. In 2010, she moved to San Antonio and built a strong community through her job and church. Valerie enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including reading, sewing, quilting, knitting, and caring for her two Yorkshire Terriers, Rocky and Lexie.
Early in her career, Valerie worked as a bank teller and then as a loan officer. She later worked for Jenny Craig, where she rose to become a mid-level manager. She left Jenny Craig in 2012 to return to the banking world. In the fall of 2022, she started a new job she was thrilled about: working with a great team at Amegy Bank. In addition to working full-time, Valerie had a thriving volunteer life at her church, Abiding Presence. Never one for much free-time, she pursued and received a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, in Business Administration from the Colorado Technical University in 2016.
She is survived by her loving children, Nathaniel and Vanessa; her sisters, Michelle Rieger and Yvonne Beckman; niece, Alysha Beckman; nephews, Kameron Beckman, Michael Rieger, and Jack Rieger; her close cousins, Mark Bennett, Patrick Bennett, Maureen Keenan, Elizabeth Hadfield, Theresa Gibbons, Tom Bennett, Matthew Bennett, Mary Anne Boyle, and their families; and many extraordinary friends. The family wishes to thank Judy Leinius, Molly Larson, Sharon Hampton and, of course, Pastor Steve for the loving care and support of Valerie in her most challenging days.
