Valerie was born on July 18, 1935, in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, to Ena Graves and James Hodkinson. In 1954, while Arnold J. Cavazos was stationed in England with the U.S. Air Force, Valerie met the love of her life. Two years later, in 1956, she moved to America, settling in Red Gate, Texas, where the two were married. Together, they built a beautiful life and celebrated 69 years of marriage.
Valerie and Arnold raised their three children in Red Gate and later in Edinburg, Texas. Valerie dedicated her career to education, working with Region 1 Education Service Center until her retirement. She was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith, active in her parish, and involved in numerous organizations and social groups.
Valerie is survived by her loving husband, Arnold; her children, Curt (†Irene), Karen (†Larry), and Kevin (Natalia); grandchildren Annalisa, Adrianna, Alexandra, Michael, David, Michelle, Steven, Jacob, Emily, and Sarah; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ena Graves and James Hodkinson.
Valerie will be remembered as a strong, graceful woman whose greatest joy was her family. Her love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew no bounds, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., with a rosary at 4:00 p.m., at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas.
