Our beloved mother, Velia Morales Gomez, born on March 14, 1934, went to be with the Lord on July 24, 2021, at the age of 87. She is preceded in death by her parents, Porfirio Morales and Maria Tobias, her loving husband, Victor Gomez Jr., sister; Juanita Castillo; brothers, Louis Morales and Raul (Rudy) Hernandez. Velia Gomez is survived by her daughter, Lydia Flores, sons, George (Karen) Gonzales, Victor lll (Margaret) Gomez and John (Erika) Gomez; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nephews and nieces. Velia spent most of her young childhood between San Antonio and Uvalde, Texas. She attended school at David Barkley Elementary and Lanier Middle School on the city’s west side. Mrs. Gomez worked as the front-line press operator tech for Worthington Fur and Storage then moved on to Gant’s shirts one of Velia’s greatest accomplishments was to pass the Texas (state license and certification exam) and become a licensed Cosmetologist. After a couple of years of working at ice cream plant at the HEB warehouse Velia retired and devoted her life to Jesus.
Velia took time after work to be a team mom for Victor and John, she worked the concession stand while Mr. Gomez watched the bar-b-que pit at the CYO field. She was also the biggest fan for high school sports and one of the proudest Honey Bear Moms at Edison HS. Many team players will remember Mrs. Gomez, as a kindhearted woman with an open house and open kitchen. You could always find her ready to roll some tortillas as she prepared something to eat. But before anyone ate, she would bring out her bible, anointing oil and pray for everyone. You see Velia was a woman that believed in the power of Our Lord Jesus. Preaching the bible and spreading the word of God and family was very much her life. So, if you came by her house or if you ran into her at the store or the mall, she would drop whatever she was doing and pray for you.
I would like to give a very special Thank You to The Stone Oak Care Center staff for meeting mom’s needs. (I know some got the oil and prayer). Also, a big THANK YOU to those that took time from their day to call or visit Mrs. Gomez before she went to be with our Lord in heaven.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, funeral services will be private.
Internment will take place in San Fernando Cemetery II.
