Walker Eugene (Gene) Hunt, Ph.D., a professor of mathematics in the Mathematics, Architecture, Physics & Engineering Department at San Antonio College (SAC) and 57-year resident of San Antonio, Texas, died after a 2½ year battle with nodular melanoma on September 1, 2023, at the age of 86.
Gene is survived by his sister, Rosetta Obs; brother and sister-in-law Herschell Davis Sr. and Amarech Hunt; brothers, Irvin Berlin Hunt, Timothy Hunt, James Lee Hunt, Sr., and Maryland Hunt; and brother and sister-in-law Eleow and Linda Hunt as well as a host of family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, brother, Major Jerome Hunt, and sister, Patsy Ann Crayton.
Gene was born in Luling, Texas on June 7, 1937, to Walker and Mary Belle Hardeman Hunt. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics in 1960, a Master of Arts in Mathematics in 1962, and Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics in 1979. Significantly, Gene was part of the first cohort of African American undergraduates at THE University, known as the Precursors, who trailblazed a path for generations of African American scholars to come.
After completing his master’s studies, Gene served as a part-time instructor and visiting professor at Huston-Tillotson College and Prairie View A&M College, respectively, between 1962 and 1966. In 1966, Gene accepted a full-time faculty position in the Mathmetics Department at SAC. He went on to teach at SAC for 57 years, pursuing his three great loves: love of learning, love of learners and the love of bringing the first two loves together.
Gene was a fiercely devoted son, brother, uncle, friend, mentor, and educator. He was an avid sports fan and loved his Longhorns as well as the Astros, Cowboys, and Lakers. He was also a lifelong learner, and voracious reader and student of history. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at the Porter Loring Mortuary Chapel at 1101 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, Texas 78212. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery at 3304 East 12th Street, Austin, Texas 78721.
