Walter James Dill, a dedicated husband, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully passed away on August 12, 2023, at the age of 86. He was born on February 9, 1937, in San Antonio, Texas to Martha Dill. He had the great good fortune to be welcomed into the family of Mr. Emil & Mrs. Gertrude Boeck at age 9 months. All members of this family of choice influenced his life, but it was the unconditional love of Gertrude (Nonnie) and the brotherly bond with Mr. Jimmie Boeck that would guide him his entire life.
He is preceded in death by daughter Debbie Hawkins and members of his Boeck family. He is survived by the love of his life of 55 years, Barbara Mueller Dill; son, Bobby Hall; son, Will Hall; daughter, Stacy Dill and her husband Sydney Hoffman; grandchildren, Courtney Ayala, Jeremy Butler, Cody Hall, Braedan Hall, Teddy Hoffman, and Sam Hoffman; 6 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Buddy Mueller; sister-in-law, Susie Williams; cousins Hans-Jurgen Schuster, Martin Schuster, and Inge Axtmann of Germany; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1955 and attended St. Mary's University before his path led him to the Local 142 Plumbers and Pipefitters Apprenticeship Program, where he honed his skills and embraced the proud tradition of craftsmanship. As a union plumber, he dedicated his career to the artistry of his trade, contributing his expertise to countless projects within the city of San Antonio. He worked at Lone Star Brewery where he ensured that the "red & white" and the "blue & white" made it through the pipework to cans and kegs for 27 years. Additionally, he served his local union as Financial Secretary-Treasurer where he advocated for the rights of his fellow brothers and sisters of Local 142, as well as training the tradesman of tomorrow through years of service as an educator and Coordinator of the apprenticeship program.
In his younger years, Walter enjoyed hunting and training field-trial retrievers and helping his children with their FFA and 4H projects. He was an avid history buff who read about every historical period and topic with great interest. He cherished time spent traveling to Canada and Germany with his wife and Jimmie and JoAnne Boeck. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was exceedingly proud of their successes.
Walter's memory will forever be carried in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have crossed his path.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In place of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Boysville, Inc. in Walter's honor.
