William Allen Grubaugh, devoted husband of Karen Lee Grubaugh and known affectionately as Bill, Dad, or Grandpa, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, in San Antonio, TX, at the age of 87. Born on October 18, 1937, in Vandalia, IL, to the late Mildred White Grubaugh and Willie Allen Grubaugh, Bill's life was a testament to the values of love, kindness, and intelligence that he embodied.
Bill grew up in St. Elmo, IL, where he shared a close bond with his sisters, Kay Costanza and the late Bobbie June Jerden. He dedicated a large portion of his life to serving his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Bill earned a Bachelor of Accounting degree from Michigan State University and was still doing other people's taxes in his final years. His sense of duty was a hallmark of his character, and he carried that commitment into his civilian life where he drove a bus for handicapped children. He took great pride in ensuring that these children were transported safely and with compassion, often going the extra mile to make their days a little brighter.
Bill's caring nature was evident in every aspect of his life, especially in the love he poured into his family. He was a devoted father to his children: Teresa, the late Linda, Kenneth, the late Joe, Allen, David, Vaughn, Shawn, and Keri. Each of them inherited his loving spirit and kind heart, and they will carry forward his legacy in their own lives.
An avid fisherman, Bill found solace and joy in the tranquility of nature. The vegetable garden he and Karen cultivated was a source of pride and he loved sharing their bounty with friends and family. The patience and care he put into nurturing his plants mirrored the way he nurtured his relationships— with steady hands and a kind heart.
Bill's intelligence was not just in his academic achievements but also in the wisdom he shared with those around him. His advice was sought after, his words were comforting, and his presence was a source of stability.
As we bid farewell to Bill, we remember a man who was the epitome of generosity and love. He made the world a better place by simply being in it. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his family, including his grand children, great-grand children, and even great-great-grand children, and the many lives he touched.
Bill Grubaugh's life was a beautiful journey that has now come to a gentle end. As we reflect on the moments shared and the lessons learned from him, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. Rest in peace, Bill, and thank you for the love and light you brought into this world.
