Bill devoted more than 50 years to education as a teacher, coach, administrator, assistant principal, and principal in Schertz ISD, Medina Valley ISD, Southwest ISD, and at Ursuline Academy. Even in retirement, he continued serving students with special needs as a substitute teacher.
A co-founder of the Alamo City Rugby Club, Bill was a leading figure in Texas rugby for nearly five decades. He believed deeply in discipline, fairness, and mentorship, and was never afraid to speak his mind. He often reminded others that “war is not the answer” and that “this too shall pass.”
He earned degrees from the University of St. Thomas, Winona State University, and Texas A&M University. A devoted sports fan, he cheered for the San Antonio Spurs, Texas A&M Aggies, and Minnesota Vikings.
He is survived by his sons, Bill Jr. and Eric (Ariel); adoptive son, Dr. Kenneth Helmer; grandchildren Lucy, Frank, and Tommy; sister Barbara (Ken); brother Paul (Julie); and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held April 4, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at Porter Loring McCullough, 1101 McCullough Ave, San Antonio, TX 78212, followed by a gathering at The Cottage Irish Pub.
