Bill grew up on the family farm in Halls TN where his lifelong love of gardening had begun. He graduated from Halls High School, Halls, TN in 1947.
Bill joined the USAF in July 1948 with basic training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX. Later in 1948 he served at Homestead AFB, Miami, Florida where he met Marylyn Fagen and they married in 1951 until her death in 2018 (66 years). During his Air Force tenure he was stationed at Albrook AFB, Canal Zone, Panama from 1951-1955 where he and Marylyn’s children (Lissa Lea and David Mark) were born. From Panama they moved back to the states and he served at Palm Beach AFB, FL 1955-1959; Tinker AFB,OK 1959-1961; Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, AK 1961-1964; Kelly AFB, San Antonio, TX 1964-1972; where the family settled while he went on to Clarke AFB, Philippines 1972-1973, then back to Kelly AFB, San Antonio, TX. While stationed at Kelly AFB and Clarke AFB, he traveled on USAF business to East Berlin, Czechoslovakia, Japan, Viet Nam, Thailand, and Taipei until he retired from the USAF in 1975 in San Antonio, TX. After retiring from the Air Force he worked in civil service at Kelly AFB 1977-1994 during that time he traveled on business to England, Germany, Italy and Greece. He retired in 1994. After full retirement he and Marylyn built and lived in their retirement dream home in Medina County.
Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marylyn; father, Ira Lacey Knox; mother, Grace Era Paige Knox; brother, Hollis Paige Knox, and brother-in-law Earl Orwig.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law: Lissa and Jude Okruhlik; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Shannon Knox. Grandchildren: Logan Knox , Ryan Knox and wife Lindsay, and Alaina Knox, brother James F Knox and wife Thalia, sister Mary Orwig, brother-in-law Henry J Fagen Jr and wife Phyllis with numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was ordained a Baptist deacon in 1963. Bill and Marylyn were members of Calvary Hills Baptist Church.
Services will be held at Calvary Hills Baptist Church, 910 W Loop 1604 N, San Antonio, TX 78251 on 10/10/25 with viewing at 10 AM, services at 11 AM with burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Calvary Hills Baptist Church.
