William Stephen Nelson, 88, known as “Bill” during his younger years and “Steve” for most of his life, passed away on February 13, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Gilmer to Ethel Mae Spencer Nelson and Steve Allen Nelson. Steve took his first piano lesson at age 8 from Mrs. Irene Arnold, and it sparked a lifelong passion. After graduation from Gilmer High School, he majored in music at the University of North Texas, then attended The Julliard School and earned a master’s degree at Baylor University. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he joined the music faculty of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama where he enjoyed a 42-year career teaching piano. In retirement, Steve continued to teach and served as organist for several local churches. In 2012, he moved to San Antonio to be near his son and family and continued to play for church services. Though he was a great musical talent, he was always humble. Steve was an exceptionally devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who knew no sacrifice too great for his family. He had many close and lasting friendships and was frugal in fulfilling his own needs so he could be more generous with others. One of Steve’s most endearing qualities was how he always sought the positive in any hardship. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Hubert Nelson, and sister, Velma Ragan. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Lisa Nelson; grandchildren, Stephen Nelson and Jessica Muller (Joe); great-granddaughter, Rhea Muller, and a great-grandson yet to arrive; cousins, Amy Patterson (Gary) and Judy Anderson (Mac). For those who wish to make memorial donations, the family suggests Alzheimer’s Association or gifts designated for the music ministry at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, San Antonio, Texas.
