William Benford Rankin, known affectionately as Bill by his family and friends, passed away on May 26th, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. Bill was born in Washington D.C. on August 2nd, 1943, and was a man of service and selflessness throughout his 80 years. His life was marked by his passion for people, especially his family and friends. He loved talking to anyone and everyone, learning from them, and drawing connections to both their shared and unique experiences.
Bill grew up in Hagerstown, Maryland where he graduated from St. Maria Goretti Catholic High School in 1961. His passion for learning and commitment to service led him to the United States Air Force Academy Prep School followed by the United States Air Force Academy, where he was commissioned with the class of 1966. Bill furthered his education with two master’s degrees, one from Catholic University and the other from the University of Arizona.
During his time in the military and his post-service career, Bill's dedication and work ethic were unmatched. His distinguished service in the United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of Colonel, culminated with his command of the 7th Communications Group. After retiring from the military, Bill worked for the Department of Energy as a consultant focused on the country’s Nuclear Readiness.
Bill's love for his family was immense. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Karen Summerfield Rankin, their sons, David Allen Rankin and Samuel Benford Rankin, and four beloved grandchildren, Elena Maria, Alexander Benford, Elizabeth Juliet, and Rex David Rankin. He also leaves behind a legacy of kinship through his younger brothers, Kenneth, Robert, and George Rankin. He is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Rankin, father, Kenneth L Rankin, and brother, John Rankin.
Those who knew Bill would describe him as a hardworking man who loved solving problems. His inquisitive nature contributed to him being a genuine listener and natural conversationalist. Bill strived not to be a success, but rather to be of value and embodied this philosophy through every facet of his life, offering his knowledge and insights generously to all who sought them.
Bill's love for his grandchildren was a source of great happiness. He relished every opportunity to spend time with them, guiding them with his wisdom and sharing in their joys and triumphs. His presence was a gift that they will carry with them always. They also learned from Grampy to smile and laugh often, and not take life too seriously.
Bill Rankin lived a life full of purpose, learning, and love. His impact was felt by many, from the people he worked for, with, and commanded in his military career to the cherished moments he shared with his family. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we remember the legacy he leaves behind – one of service, learning, and dedication to those he loved. As he reunites with the stars, we take comfort in knowing that his journey was fulfilled with the same excellence and dignity that he carried in life.
It is with this remembrance that Bill's family and friends will gather to honor his memory. While his voice may have quieted, the echoes of his life's work, the love for his family, and the conversations that sparked thought and reflection will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 pm., Sunday, June 2, 2024, at Porter Loring Mortuary. Mass Monday, June 3, 2024, at 9:30 am at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 223 East Summit, Graveside at 11:15 am, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road.
