William Arnett Read

Maj. William Arnett Read, (USMC Ret.) 96, entered the nearer presence of our Lord on Sept. 4, 2024. Bill was born in Harlingen, Texas, August 28, 1928, to Walter Ballard Read and Elizabeth Thompson Read. He was raised in San Antonio and was a proud 1945 graduate of Brackenridge High School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Marine Corps. His decorated military career spanned 21 years and included service in the Korean Conflict and Viet Nam War. He retired with the rank of Major. Bill returned to San Antonio, becoming the Director of Human Resources at Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, a position he held for 25 years. Bill was a faithful member of St. Francis Episcopal Church where he served as an usher and Senior Warden. He was a man of honor, integrity, quiet faith, and good humor, a loving father and devoted husband. Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris Sobieski Read; three sons, Thomas Read and wife Teresa, Kelly Read, the Rt. Rev. Dr. David G. Read and wife Jacqueline; five grandchildren, Madison Zauner and husband Bill, Bronson Read, Amy Rogers and husband Harley, William Aidan Read, Abby Read; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 4242 Bluemel Road, at 9:30 am on Wednesday, September 11. Interment with full military honors will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers you are invited to make donations to St. Francis’ Episcopal Church or Morningside Ministries Greenhouse Homes.
