
Colonel William Randolph Ward, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at Park Lane West. Colonel Ward was born in Kansas City, MO., and was a graduate of Wichita North High School, Wichita, KS. and received his law degree from Washburn University, Topeka, KS. He practiced law in Fredonia, KS and Wichita, KS, before he went on active duty with the Army in 1940. He served in the Coast Artillery in CA, and was with the 17th Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C. before other assignments in Europe and the Philippines. While in the Philippines he was assigned to the Judge Advocate Generals Office in Japan. He served 16 years with the Judge Advocate Generals Corps of the Army and served four years as executive officer of the Eighth Army Staff Judge Advocate Section in Yokohama, Japan, where he was involved in the review of 90 percent of the Japanese war crimes trials. From 1962 to 1967 he was Assistant City Attorney for San Antonio. In 1967 he joined USAA and became assistant Vice President, Counsel, of IMCO and Investment Counsel of USAA, retiring in 1977. Col Ward a resident of San Antonio for 40 years, was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, his first wife, Dorothy Glass Ward who died in 1983 and his second wife Lucy Kellner Ward who died in 1990. Surviving Col. Ward are a very special friend, Mrs. Dorothy Eisenhart of San Antonio; sister-in-law, Mrs. Vera George of Topeka, KS; nieces and nephews; stepson and stepdaughter; godchildren and many friends.
