He lived most of his childhood in California and one of his fondest memories was spending several summers camping and exploring the Plumas County National Forest in the northern Sierra Nevada with his family. On his 18th birthday he enlisted in the U.S. Army and had a brief deployment overseas as World War II was coming to a close. After being discharged he relocated to San Antonio, Texas and then quickly moved on to graduate from North Texas State University. Many of their vacations and spare time were devoted to motorcycle trips throughout the western United States visiting national parks and historical sights as well as roaming around Texas. They also enjoyed hours of sailing their sailboat on the waters of Canyon Lake. Jim was also a huge enthusiast in the hobby of building and flying radio controlled airplanes. He was also an avid reader of biographies and US and World history. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Hazel and Richard Brough and stepdaughter Kathleen Fender.
