Wayne Grant, beloved physician, author, missionary, mentor, and faithful servant of God, passed away on January 9, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 84. He was born on February 5, 1941 in Quincy, Florida to Laura and Woodrow Grant.
For approximately 40 years, Wayne served as a pediatrician in private practice, becoming a trusted and compassionate physician to generations of families. In addition to his private practice, he devoted many years of service as a pediatrician and child development specialist in a variety of leadership and academic roles. He served for approximately 25 years as Medical Director of the Rio Grande River Ministry (now River Ministry) and was later named Physician Emeritus at Southwest Children’s Center. He also served as medical director of the South Texas Children’s Habilitation Center and as a clinical faculty member at the University of Texas at San Antonio Medical School. Earlier in his career, Wayne served in the United States Army as a pediatrician, extending his calling to serve both country and community.
Wayne was a prolific author and thoughtful teacher. His published works included Growing Parents Growing Children, The Caring Father, and Strategies for Success—How to Help Your Child with Attention Deficit Disorder, along with many other books and writings on parenting, marriage enrichment, and spiritual growth. Through his Becoming newsletter, he shared monthly and quarterly spiritual reflections that offered encouragement, insight, and hope to many.
Deeply committed to Christian service, Wayne served on the Board of the Baptist Medical Dental Fellowship and was a founding council member of the San Antonio chapter of the Christian Medical and Dental Association and served on the Board of Trustees for Howard Payne University for twenty one years. He participated in numerous medical and dental mission trips to Mexico, Africa and Jordan. In 2004, he was honored with the Texas Baptist Missions Foundation Pioneer Award in recognition of his lifelong leadership and impact in missions.
At Trinity Baptist Church, Wayne served as Past Chairman of Deacons, Minister of Education alongside his wife Veronica, Sunday School department director and teacher, and a member of the Pastor Church Committee. He was known for his calm presence, gentle wisdom, and unwavering faith—someone others naturally turned to in times of uncertainty and need. As a mentor and friend, Wayne had a rare ability to bring out the best in those around him.
Outside of his professional and ministry life, Wayne found great joy in God’s creation. He was an avid gardener and a Master Volunteer Gardener at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, as well as a bird watcher and hiker. He was also a devoted San Antonio Spurs fan and longtime season ticket holder. He and Veronica were gracious hosts, known for shared meals, handwritten notes, and thoughtful gestures that reflected their genuine care for others.
Above all, Wayne deeply loved his family. His legacy is one of faith lived quietly but powerfully, of service offered with humility, and of lives forever changed by his compassion and encouragement.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Goldie Denton. Wayne is survived by his wife, Veronica S. Grant, son, Brad Grant (Jean); daughter Kristen Krawczynski (Ken); grandchildren, Victoria, Kevin, Veronika, and Anastasia; great-grandson, Jack; sister, Brenda Blanco (Rudy); brother, Travis Grant; and numerous nieces and nephews.
