She was born August 24, 1936 in Jiaopiang, China. After graduating from the Beijing University of Physical Education in 1960, she worked as a gymnastics instructor in Beijing, China, before retiring in 1991. She first came to the United States in 1998 with her husband, Lin Youyan, to help take care of their grandson, Ben. Then, they returned in 2004 to help care for their grandson, Blake, for the remainder of their lives in America.
Yang Xiangnu had such a selfness, nurturing spirit. She wouldn't hesitate to cook a delicious meal or two on the spot, and all who knew her either directly or indirectly, didn't hesitate to indulge. Being in a foreign land is tough, and as of 2012, living without her husband was tougher, but she always kept an open mind and joyous attitude, and even learned a few choice words in English. Her sense of humor always came through, no matter the language, paired with a wonderful smile. She enjoyed fancy broaches, the occasional beer or wine, cooking, dancing, sewing, and gardening. We will honor her life with strength, solidarity, and fond laughter – there are many memories of her we all share and cherish forever. She will be dearly missed.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
