On Friday, April 22, 2022, Ruby Delight Holmes, loving mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 87. She is survived by her son John, his spouse, Jo Anna, and grandchildren Sarah, Micah, and Seth. She was predeceased by her daughter Holly (2021).
Delight was born in Pomona, CA on September 20, 1934, the only child of Carl and Alice Anderson. Delight's father was a pastor's pastor and they put down roots in San Bernardino as it provided easy access to travel to nearby Assembly of God churches. Delight graduated from San Bernardino High school in 1952. Shortly after graduating, she started her education at Valley College and went on to Whittier College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education.
Delight's first child, Holly, was born in September, 1963, and four years later a son, John, in April, 1967.
Delight served God all her life and was a member of The First Assembly of God in San Bernardino for 60 years. She was involved in many activities there. sock as Her love of teaching led her to work at Colton Unified School District, where she taught elementary grades for 38 years. She loved it so much she went on to be a long-term sub for her friends many years after she retired.
After retirement, Delight loved to keep busy! She enjoyed traveling with her daughter Holly, scrapbooking, square- dancing, leading a cancer support group, and volunteering as a tutor with the county of San Bernardino. She was part of two chapters of the Red Hat Society and was an avid member of the Loma Linda Strummers where she played the ukulele!
Family and faith were the most important things to Delight. She loved her grandchildren very much and was always helpful with school work and other educational activities. She loved taking photos with them every visit and made sure to document them in each child's very own scrap book.
Delight's life wasn't always easy. Her daughter Holly battled childhood brain cancer and later, Delight herself had breast cancer. Divorce and dementia were other battles she fought and she did it all with dignity, grace, and a smile on her face. Her name, Delight, was an outward and inward display of what a kind, loving, joyful mother, grandmother and friend she was.
She was an example to us all and we will miss her until we see her again.
