Maxine Joe Coleman-was born to Lewis and Modest Coleman on July 13, 1934. Maxine lived her whole life in Muscoy, California, in the home her father built. She grew up with a country life style of climbing trees, helping with farm animals and growing gardens with her parents and her big brother, “Monte Milton Coleman”. Her two best friends as a child were Jimmy Potter and her big dog “Brownie”. She always had an undying love for dogs.
In June of 1961 she would marry “Roger Fred Altmann” from Wisconsin. In March of 1962 Maxine would give birth to their one and only daughter, Kowana who would later be nicknamed and known to all as “Koko”. Sadly in 1963 Maxine would become a widow when her husband Roger would be killed in an automobile accident. Maxine and her 15 month old daughter Koko would move back to her childhood home with her mom and her brother. Monte became like a father figure to Koko along with, Modest (Nana), who helped Maxine raise her child. Monte soon married and moved away which allowed these three awesome people to get into mischief and experience many fun times.
Maxine worked many jobs; Kaiser Steel, Safeway Markets, Frosty Freeze Restaurants. She was most proud and enjoyed being a dance instructor for Arthur Murray’s Dance Studio. She also worked at Valley Thrift for 15 years, and later was a caregiver for the State of California. From the late 90’s to 2004 her greatest job was caring for her mother Nana who we lost in 2004. When her mother died it took a great toll on Maxine’s heart. After Monte’s wife passed away he moved back to the family home. Maxine and Monte became companions for each other. They fought, laughed and loved as brothers and sisters do. When Monte passed away in September of 2010, we thought we would lose her. But Maxine over came her grief with the help of her daughter, grandchildren, and great grand children. Together they watched over her, cared for her and loved her. In all the adversities she experienced Maxine never lapsed in her faith or lost her love of God. She was a unique woman, was loved by so many people, and loved others as God loved her.
Maxine is survived by her daughter Kowana and husband Gregg Walsh; three daughters, Misty and husband Jared Huntley, Brandy Walsh, and Melissa and husband Mike Weber. Also one grandson Cody Walsh. She also had 5 great grandchildren; Jacob and Aiden Hernandez, Zackary Huntley, Madison and Mason Weber. She is also survived by two self-adopted daughters; Elizabeth (Peanut) Risley and Sheila Joslin, and preceded in death by self- adopted son William C. Asher. Maxine is, was and always be loved by all who knew her. Good bye Grammy (Foxtail) we will always love you!
