Rickey faced health challenges throughout his life that he was blessed to overcome starting with contracting Rheumatic Fever where he was confined to San Bernardino County Hospital for a lengthy amount of time. In his childhood he found comfort on the basketball court at Johnson Hall with his peers. He was educated through the San Bernardino Unified School District where he graduated from San Gorgonio High School in 1976. He extended his education at San Bernardino Valley College where he earned his Water Supply Technology Certificate.
In his younger days, Rickey was affectionately known as “Hondo” on the court after NBA legend Hondo Havlicek as his friends valued his basketball skills. As an adult he was most common known as “Slick Rick” as he took pride in always being dressed to the tee and wore his long hair slicked back in a ponytail. Rickey enjoyed sports and was a die-heart fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends rather it was a trip to the casino or enjoying time in his hometown.
Rickey was preceded in death by his grandmother Mary Brooks, mother Lupe Martinez, sister Annette Turner, brother Mack “Mackie” Johnson, special uncle Robert “Bobby” Rubalcava.
