Alice Marie Wilson was born in Tennessee to Floyd and Alice Wilson on March 2, 1938. She was their only child. Alice Jr. was known as Marie due to her being named after her mother. As a small child Marie spent a lot of time with her maternal grandmother who was her favorite, her Big Momma. Yes, she had a Big Momma who definitely spoiled her as did her uncles and cousins. Marie spent additional time in the country with Big Momma in order to help keep their small school open. Although too young to attend school Marie was a necessary body in attendance. Marie’s mother eventually had to intervene on the amount of time spent with her Big Momma due to her becoming spoiled. Growing up Marie’s parents had a café where she helped out after school and on weekends. At the café she learned to play pool during the down time beating many adults. She also taught herself to use marbles in place of the pool balls. Marie loved to play pool and became so good at it she dreamt of one day playing professionally. Marie eventually abandoned this dream as this was not a profession for women at the time. Marie always did her best to make her parents proud and to let them know she could be trusted. During her last year in high school Marie’s father moved the family to Phoenix, Arizona. Marie wanted to finish school in Tennessee so her parents allowed her to remain with family and finish her senior year. Upon graduation from Chester County High School Marie moved out to Phoenix, Arizona to join her parents.
Upon joining her parents in Arizona Marie got a job as an elevator operator at a department store where she soon met Peter Durham Jr, the love of her life. The two were married in 1957, in Phoenix. Through this blessed union came a son Charles Peter and 3 daughters, Angela, Sherry and Patrice. Marie & Peter would eventually spend 58 years together for better or worse, good times and bad, living, laughing and loving through it all.
After marriage Marie worked in a hospital while living in Phoenix as a lab tech until moving to San Diego. She enjoyed this work and often wished she had continued. Upon moving to San Diego Marie was a stay-at-home Mom who walked her young daughters to school, volunteered at their school, in classrooms and the cafeteria. She was a part of the PTA and PTG. Marie volunteered at St. Jude’s Academy until all 3 daughters had graduated and was later roped into volunteering on occasion when one of her grandchildren attended St. Jude’s. Marie began working full time with the San Diego Unified School District while her daughters were in high school and retired after 20+ years.
Marie was an avid church goer. She faithfully attended Christ the King with her family. Marie volunteered her time at Christ the King before returning home to Tennessee where she volunteered at St. Mary’s joining the Heartwarmers in 2007, assisting in making hundreds of quilts each year for those in need.
Marie had many hobbies including macrame, ceramics, cooking to name a few and some definite loves besides family, friends and faith, which included sewing, shooting pool, dancing, music, quilting and basketball. Ahhh basketball…it is rumored she loved it more than Peter did and even attended a few Memphis Grizzlies games. And she wasn’t scared to pile into a car for a trip to SC for very good food and fun company. Marie was a part of Chat & Stitch, (named Chat & Chew by Peter because he said he never saw them sew a stitch) and the Birthday Club. These ladies traveled, attended plays, donated gifts for children to make sure they had a nice Christmas. These ladies celebrated life as well as each other.
Alice Marie was called home on the morning of April 15, 2024. She was preceded in death by her new born son Charles Peter, her father Floyd Wilson, infant grandson Alexander Dumas II, mother Alice Wilson, husband Peter Durham Jr and newborn great-grandson Evan Sebastian.
