Anne was Jesuit educated and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Fordham University where she was a shrewd member of the debate team. One of the highlights of her Fordham experience was being selected “Snow Queen” in 1949. Upon graduation she taught in the NYC school system. She later accepted a teaching position with the Department of the Army in Germany to teach the dependent children of the military. While in Europe, she traveled extensively and enjoyed skiing in the Alps on weekends. During this period, she met 1LT Francis “Frank” Winfield. Their courtship led them back to the United States in 1955, where they married at the United States Military Academy Catholic Chapel at West Point, NY.
As a busy mother of 6 and Army wife, Anne’s life involved numerous family relocations, as well as extensive entertaining as an officer’s wife. She always provided a loving home environment where she generously nurtured the hearts and minds of her children.
Their assignments included tours of duty in ten different locations in and outside the United States. Anne resumed teaching elementary school during the later years. She and Frank eventually settled in Scripps Ranch (San Diego) in 1975 upon his Army retirement. There, she and Frank integrated with the Scripps Ranch community and developed lifelong friendships. She was active with her Catholic Parish of St Gregory the Great where she and Frank were among the founding families of the parish. She also established and operated a successful flooring business, Asset Carpets, for 18 years.
Anne had a vibrant personality, an easy laugh and a welcoming smile. Anne had a vigor for life and was a beautiful woman both outwardly and within her heart. She loved the Lord and will be sorely missed by her family and many friends.
