It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Annmary Gomez on January 30th, 2026. Ann was our dearly beloved wife and mother. And to the extended family, the dearest grandmother, mother-in-law, daughter, sister, and aunt to ten nieces & nephews. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends.
Ann was born on October 8th, 1956, in Brooklyn, New York to her loving parents, Mary and John L. Sullivan. She was the eldest of five daughters; Catherine, Eileen, Geraldine and Jacquie. At a very early age, and for no particular reason, Ann would greet passersby in the streets of Brooklyn with the question, “How’s your mother?” We came to understand it was just the beginning of her inquisitive nature, along with a welcoming and friendly personality which would continue throughout her whole life.
In 1964 her family left city life and moved out to suburban Long Island NY, into a Levitt home with a pine wooded backyard. John and Mary would seek out a solid Catholic school education for their children at St John of God and St John the Baptist. For summer fun, the parents would pile all five daughters and a few friends into their station wagon and head out to the shores of Fire Island, spending long hours enjoying the ocean. During this time Ann would develop her love of learning, love for the sun and fun of beaches, and a lifelong friendship with Dot.
Ann met her husband Bill during the summer of 1973 when they worked together part time at a postal factory. Not so enamored with the work of sorting junk mail, they both soon became enamored with each other during breaks at the coffee truck. And so, they married some five years later, on January 14, 1978, a union that would last for 48 years. Bill was a package deal - his parents, Bill Sr. & Olga, and sister Gail immediately bonded with and loved Ann, who they fondly referred to as Annie. Soon after, Maegan May and Marielle were a welcome addition to an already large Puerto Rican & Irish Catholic family that populated a good portion of New York and Long Island. When their daughters grew up to have families of their own, Ann and Bill would follow them out to San Diego, California. They were ecstatic to celebrate their daughters’ weddings to their West Coast husbands, Ben and Darran, who Ann adored. Her joy grew exponentially over the next 6 years with the birth of her four grandchildren, Charlie (14), Owen (11), Evie (11) and Billy (9). She could often be found having lots of fun and laughing with the grandkids at one of her daughter’s houses, a local library, the zoo, the beach or at one of their favorite ice cream shops.
Professionally, Ann pursued her love of books by first working at B. Dalton’s Bookstore in the Bay Shore Mall. While working she pursued her educational goals by earning a BA at John Jay College in NYC and then a MA Degree in Library Sciences and Information Systems at Long Island University in Brookville, NY. She would go on to spread her joy of reading and love of books to countless children, teens and adults while working at libraries on Long Island and in San Diego. As a volunteer, she gave her time to both the Humane Society and the San Diego Zoo. She loved to help direct people around the animal shelter (mostly to see the puppies) and help tourists find their way to the pandas at the zoo.
Wherever Ann went she made others feel loved, comforted, listened to and cared for. She wanted to know and connect with each person as an individual. Whether you were walking into her library for the first time or had known her all your life, Ann dedicated all her energy to finding out what you needed in that moment: a laugh, a 4-hour conversation, the perfect gift or a good book recommendation. She lived her life laughing, loving and supporting all those around her.
Please join us to celebrate her beautiful life.
