

In Memory of Arbie Wooten Arbie Wooten, 87, passed away on July 25th. 2016. He was born in Seymour, Tx. on February 3rd, 1929, to John & Lena Wooten. He was raised in Lubbock, Tx., the youngest of 6 children. He had one sister, Johnnie Mae and four brothers, Cliff, Frank, Billy and Jim, pre-deceased by all. Also, predeceased by nieces, Shirley, Glenda, Robbie & nephew, Dannie, just this past month. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Hazel, son Ron, daughter Kim, granddaughter Candace, and grandson, Casey, as well as 70 nieces and nephews. Arbie was only 14 year years old when his mom died. Later, he and his dad moved to Oceanside, California, to live near relatives. Shortly after they settled in the Chula Vista/National CIty area and he attended Sweetwater High School. His first job was at Dierdoff Fruit Company in Lubbock, Tx, delivering fruit to stores, restaurants and ice cream shops. He later learned the electrical trade from his dad and the result was a 50 year plus career as a commercial electrician in the Electrician’s Local 569, IBEW. He was never a meeting person but he was very proud of his Union membership. His motto was: “We do not strike, but neither can anyone out there do what we do”. Some of his memorable jobs were the Navy Hospital, Mercy Hospital, former University High School, shopping centers, bank buildings and the famous El Cajon Jail. His interests were many, supporting Ron with his quarter midget racing career, coaching Little League, Pony & Colt League for Ron, and Bobbysox Softball for Kim. Later, it was camping in the desert with friends & relatives. Next came the “place” at the river where he loved to fish in the quiet backwater with close friends. Following retirement in 1989, there were numerous vacaions throughout the southwest for trout fishing and relaxing. Additionally, cruises to various parts of the world with Alaska topping the list. Also, his love of the Padres led to annual Spring Training visits to Peoria, Az. He was very active in the East County Kiwanis Club, following Hazel to every fundraising event for many years…He was more than willing to participate in projects to help the Youth of San Diego’s East County. He will be missed and loved always by those who were fortunate to know him. . Arbie was a great friend, father, grandfather, uncle and most of all, a wonderful husband. Donations are welcome in his name to the Kiwanis Club of East San Diego, P. O. Box 892, La Mesa, Ca 91944. Proceeds will fund a special project for foster youths.
