Athan Tony, a lifelong resident of San Diego with a personality that was totally his own, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2023. Born in Santa Barbara, CA to Greek parents (Gus and Zoie Katsantonis), the family moved to San Diego when Athan was about 4 years old. He attended Pacific Beach Elementary and Junior High, then La Jolla High School with his brothers. In 1956 Athan enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Europe. He returned stateside in 1958 and entered the reserves, where he was honorably discharged as Sergeant in 1963.
Athan married Jacquelyn (nee Elder) in 1959 (divorced 1984), and together they had three children: John Tony (Pam), Marina Reich (John) and Krista Bloome (Cory), and two grandsons, Andrew and Jasper. Athan was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brothers William Tony and Peter Tony. He leaves behind his sister, Marina Paterson, who was his caretaker in his later years.
Athan’s love of the ocean was lifelong, surfing the local breaks in PB and LJ in his youth. He found work laying carpet and later founded his own business, Tony and Associates, in 1969. He was an avid fan of the San Diego Chargers and Padres. Athan also loved serving as a little league baseball coach in the mid -70’s.
Athan was always devoted to his family, from a very young age until his passing. To say we will miss him is a true understatement. He worked hard, absolutely loved a good laugh and cherished every sunset. His presence will be felt by all who know and love him. Rest in peace, Athan.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.pacificbeachchapel.com for the Tony family.
