June 2,1924-June24,2015
Loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Ben grew up in San Pedro CA and then moved to San Diego after meeting the "Love of his Life" Algerina Freitas. They have five children, five grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Before meeting his wife, he served as a Merchant Marine and was in the Army Paratroopers. After serving his country, he returned to what he truly loved and became a Captain on Tuna Seiners which he continued to do until he was 87 years old. After a devastating fall in the Marshall Islands doing what he truly loved , he became a quadriplegic fighting a battle for two and a half years but always with a smile on his face. He had more friends then the sea has fish. He was smart, hard working, compassionate man who loved his family, especially his two grandsons Frank and Shaun and loved watching his four great grandchildren play sports, dance and grow up. They will especially miss coming to his house for his special pancakes as they would tell you "no one can make pancakes like grandpa Maughan". He will be missed by all, but not forgotten. We will not say goodbye, just say we love you and will see you in heaven. Ben is survived by his wife, Algerina of 68 years, daughter, Algerina and her husband Frank, his two sons John and Ben, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren, Frank, Autumn, Audrey and John. Ben is preceded in death by his two daughters, Sherrilyn and Darlene. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 15th at Beardsley Mitchell Funeral Home in Ocean Beach from 6-8pm with a rosary at 7pm. A memorial mass is planned on Thursday July 16th at 9:30 am at Saint Agnes Church in Point Loma. Followed by a military service at Miramar National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations made to our Veterans and Sharp Hospice who both took such great care of Ben would be greatly appreciated.
