Pastor Charles Ray Russell, Sr., 86, of San Diego left with the Lord on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, loving husband of Mary Jane, beloved son of the late Gene and Mary “Kathryn” Eulema (nee Best) Satterfield, dearest father of Julie Rae Misleh and the late Charles “Chuck” Ray Russell, Jr. (Debra), dear brother of Virginia Miller (Joe), Ted, (Lois), Wayne (Lynn), and Kathy Satterfield, grandfather of four, great-grandfather of three, uncle to nine nieces and nephews, pastor and friend to his church family, and to countless others.
Charly was born on February 7, 1936, in Charleston, Arkansas. When he was a teenager, his family moved to Los Angeles. After graduating from Bell Gardens High School, Charly joined the U.S. Navy on July 12, 1954.
After the Navy, Charly started his career at San Diego Gas and Electric. He stayed with SDG&E and worked his way up from lab tech to supervisor in the Generation Business Unit. He retired, after over 40 years of service, on June 1, 2001.
Charly’s less worldly pursuits, though, were his proudest and important accomplishments.
In the early 60’s Charly broke ground and started the first guitar mass at his local Catholic church. He was so proud of his first vocalist, Julie, his 7-year daughter.
He was ordained as a Christian Pastor on August 12, 1990, by Cornerstone Chapel of San Diego. Then, on December 7, 1997, ordained as a Christian Pastor by Calvary Chapel Point Loma. At Point Loma, Charly ministered to thousands, and served as Assistant Pastor until his call up to Heaven.
With his spare time, what little he had, Charly loved to read scripture, sing and play his guitars, and cherished playing with his son Chuck who was an amazing guitar player. Charly also was quite the dancer, especially the jitterbug. He enjoyed worldwide travel and was especially blessed to be baptized in the Jordan River.
Next to loving the Lord and His Word, his family, his church and friends, Charly loved being in Pacific Beach, from younger years of jogging on the boardwalk to his later years sitting on a bench while enjoying God’s creation and praying.
Many loved Charly, and he will be missed by all who knew him.
Charly conducted his last Bible Study on Easter Sunday in the hospital, a few days before he went to Heaven to be with the Lord.
