Dan grew up in San Diego, where he attended The Schweitzer School, Hale Junior High and Kearny High School. He went on to graduate with a degree in psychology from San Diego State University.
He was the treasured youngest son of Ramon Albert Sesma and Yoshie R Suetsugu Sesma who predeceased him.
Dan is survived by his brothers, Thomas and wife Penny Daulton and Michael and wife Joan Adams Sesma and their three daughters, Jennifer, Amelia (Matthew Barrett), and niece Harper, nephew Charles, Elena (Evan Taylor) and niece Samia, and by his devoted cousin Kathleen Bevill and her husband Bill and their daughters Emily and Hannah.
Dan was an avid reader, boasting a library of several hundred volumes with subjects ranging from fiction, to politics, to history and spirituality. He was equally passionate about music, particularly jazz and American standards, and had a collection of thousands of recordings by his favorite artists.
Dan’s uncanny memory ranged from details that could he recall with astonishing accuracy dating back to his infancy and through adulthood, but he was perhaps proudest of being able to recite from memory almost every lyric Frank Sinatra ever recorded.
Dan’s kindness, generosity of spirit, and sense of humor touched everyone who knew him. His friends, particularly his new acquaintances at his home in the Ivy Park at Sabre Springs community ranged from neighbors to staff members, all of whom recall him as a man of genuine warmth and curiosity. Anecdotes from loved ones reflect his love for life and the positive impact he had on those around him.
A private funeral service will be held at El Camino Memorial in Sorrento Valley on December 28th, followed by a public memorial and celebration of Dan’s life in February, at a time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ACLU, ACT BLUE, the Southern Poverty Law Center or the Sierra Club in Dan's honor.
