Denise Sprague passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, following a long and courageous battle with dementia. She was 78.
Denise was born in 1947 in Auburn, New York, and was raised as an only child by her devoted parents. She shared a close bond with her mother, Dorothy, who moved to San Diego alongside Denise when she left for college, reflecting the deep connection they shared.
Denise was honored as a Cherry Blossom Princess, a recognition of her natural grace and poise. At just 18 years old, she moved west to attend the University of San Diego, where she fell in love with San Diego’s sunshine, coastline, and relaxed way of life. What began as a college chapter became her lifelong home, and it was at USD that she formed her dearest and most enduring friendships.
Denise met her first husband, Monty Sprague, in La Jolla. Together, they raised two children, and Denise thrived as a homemaker and active member of the La Jolla community. She was a deeply loving and devoted mother who always advocated fiercely for her children.
She cherished life’s simple pleasures—especially the beach. Spending sunny days at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club was among her greatest joys. Denise also loved travel and experiencing different cultures, interests that fueled her creativity and curiosity throughout her life.
Denise had a lifelong love of dogs and shared her life with many beloved companions. Over the years, she cared for Schnauzers, a Vizsla, and several rescued mixed-breed dogs, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Her compassion for animals extended beyond her own home, and she proudly volunteered her time at The Ark in La Jolla, supporting and advocating for animals in need.
A gifted home cook and proud gourmand, Denise was known among friends for hosting beautifully prepared dinners that brought people together. In her early 30s, she also pursued modeling, reflecting her confidence and timeless sense of style. That keen eye for design later led her, in her early 60s, to build a successful home-staging business, where her ability to create warmth and beauty in spaces was widely admired.
After being widowed in 2007, Denise later found love again and married Bill Fisher. Together, they shared a joyful life filled with travel, companionship, and adventure.
Denise was a proud grandmother and step-grandmother and especially treasured the time she spent caring for her grandchild Blake as a baby. She is survived by her husband, Bill Fisher, and her two children, Evan and Brandon.
Denise will be remembered for her grace, warmth, creativity, and the love she gave so freely—to her family, her friends, and the animals she adored. Her presence made others feel at home, and her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched.
