Born on August 14, 1935, Don spent his formative years growing up in Morrill, Nebraska. He graduated from Morrill High School in 1953 where he played basketball and lettered in both football and track. It was also in Morrill, where Don met Evelyn, his wife, when they were seven years old. They became childhood friends, high school sweethearts and eventually were married for 68 years.
Driven by a profound sense of duty and a love for aviation, Don embarked on a distinguished 23-year career as a Naval Aviator (1953-1976), flying both large and small carrier-based aircraft. He flew with skill and dedication, earning the respect of his peers and contributing significantly to the Navy’s mission. During his time in the Navy, he earned both a Bachelor of Science in Naval Science and a Master of Science in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School.
Following his retirement as a Naval Commander, Don settled in San Diego, California, where he launched a successful second career in technology, working for SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation), until his retirement in 2000.
Don had many hobbies outside of work. He passionately believed in daily exercise and was a master of creation. He channeled his precision and focus into his deep love for building furniture, leaving behind countless beautiful, tangible legacies of his patience and artistry. A lifelong learner, Don was equally fascinated by technology, spending many satisfying hours assembling and mastering Heathkit electronic projects. Don also prided himself in designing personal birthday cards to send to those he loved, and creating yearly calendars uniquely tailored with photographs for each family member. For several decades, the calendars became the highlight of every Christmas.
Whether in uniform or long after he retired, Don continued his call to serve by how he led, how he showed up for others and above all, his dedication and support for his family. He was an unwavering, loving husband, and together, he and Evelyn built a life centered on love and support. Don was a huge advocate of obtaining a higher education. He instilled this mindset in his children and grandchildren and made sure it was financially possible for everyone to obtain a college degree.
His legacy is carried on by his loving wife Evelyn; his children, Diane (George) and Greg (Samantha); five beloved grandchildren, Adam (Lauren), Sean, Haley, Ashton, and Chase; and a great grandson, Patrick. He is also survived by his brother Keith (Betty), sister-in-law Charlotte, and several nieces and nephews.
Don's sudden passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, especially his family. His courage, generosity, wisdom and support, inspired all who knew him and his legacy will live in our hearts. He will be laid to rest, with full military honors, at the Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, California.
