BY DUANE “SAM” BEDFORD
Born 1924 – Passed 2013
Now that my flesh and heart have failed and my mortal life has ceased I look forward to a life of everlasting joy and peace.
“Play a stanza of Amazing Grace”
I was born of Fred & Hannah Bedford in the morning of April 1st 1924 in the town of Stratford, State of Iowa the last of nine siblings.
My childhood was somewhat uneventful but never-the-less satisfying. I attended the Stratford Iowa high school and I was an average student. I played baseball and basketball and I even tried out for the school choir but dropped out when the instructor informed me that I was much better at sports.
In the early summer of 1941 at the age of 17 I could see the storm clouds of war forming over the Pacific theater. I felt duty bound to be in on it at the beginning so I joined the Navy. I spent my entire time during the war in the Pacific theater and I saw action in many major and minor battles.
My Navy life was illustrious and gratifying and it lasted for 25 years. During this time I was awarded many medals and commendations.
After retiring from the Navy, I made my home in Chula Vista, California and became employed with the Solar manufacturing company building gas turbine engines.
It was during this time that I met, wooed, and married Leona Emerson and it became a marriage made in heaven as no two couples were more compatible or more in love.
After retiring from Solar, Leona and I traveled extensively throughout America and the other four continents. In addition we always saved time for assisting local charities and socializing with our many dear friends. I feel very fortunate to have had such a good and rewarding life.
I’ve been preceded in death by my grandparents, parents, five brothers, three sisters, and two wives. Survivors include many nephews, great nephews, and great nieces.
I was an active member in the following organizations:
• The American Legion
• The Veterans of Foreign Wars
• The Fleet Reserve Association
• The Marine Memorial Association
• The California Teachers Association (Honorary Member)
• The Bonita Women’s Club (Honorary Member)
• The University of Colorado Alumni Association (Honorary Member)
• The Starlight Society
• The San Diego Opera
• The San Diego Zoo (Benefactor’s Circle)
• And the San Diego Country Club
PLEASE BE ASSURED THAT I’M RESTING IN PEACE WITH MY DEAREST LEONA AT MY SIDE AGAIN
