

Dr. Schechter grew up in Dayton, Urbana, and Columbus, Ohio. He earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, completed graduate studies at The Ohio State University, and received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He continued his postgraduate medical training at Stanford University and completed his internship at the University of California, San Francisco.
He proudly served in the United States Navy as a Naval Flight Surgeon at Cherry Point, North Carolina. In 1972, Dr. Schechter established his ophthalmology practice in La Mesa, California, where he provided dedicated care to patients for many years. He also served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Diego, contributing to the education and mentorship of future physicians.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Schechter embraced adventure and the outdoors. He loved the ocean and enjoyed windsurfing, diving, deep-sea fishing, and paddle boarding. An avid traveler and accomplished snow skier, he sought destinations that combined exploration with sport. Golf was another favorite pastime. He was a devoted dog lover, especially fond of his Australian Shepherd, Angus, who was often by his side.
Dr. Schechter was known for his love of storytelling and his generous spirit, frequently inviting others to share in his travels and activities. He lived life with enthusiasm, curiosity, and openness.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Goldman Schechter; his daughter, Andrea Schechter-Wiedner and her husband John Wiedner; his son, Seth Schechter and his wife Laurel Schechter; his four grandchildren, twins Ava and Kayla Wiedner, Sydney Schechter, and Lucas Schechter; his sister, Phyllis Smilack, and his brother, Steve Schechter.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives he touched.
