04/11/1927 – 04/13/2015
Ed Souza passed away peacefully with his family by his side on April 13, 2015; two days after his 88th birthday. He suffered health issues the last few months with complications of Parkinson’s disease.
Ed was born in San Pedro, CA to Manuel and Dorothy Souza. They moved to San Diego in 1928. The sea was in Ed’s blood, starting with working in a cannery and at 16 he began tuna fishing; like many did in the Portuguese community. At 17 he enlisted in the Navy and toured the Asiatic Pacific Area as a Seaman First Class. He received the WWII Victory Medal and a Commendation Ribbon.
He married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Baptista on June 7, 1953. They were blessed to have shared 61 wonderful years together. He was a tuna fisherman for over 40 years then transitioned to an oil spill response vessel. Ed was a dedicated parishioner of Our Mother of Confidence for 52 years and served as an usher.
Ed was first and foremost a family man, as well as a good friend. He was known for his quick wit, dark sunglasses and of course his style of dancing. He will be deeply missed. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother George.
Ed’s legacy will continue with his wife Patricia; children Kathy Lamprides (Mike), Joann Hatch (George), Eddie Jr. (Shelley), Sandy Jauregui and Christine Moses (Will); grandchildren (who knew and loved him as VooVoo) Jessica, Mikey, Jonathan, Matt, Alyssa, Eddie, Lauren, Leo (Helen), Derek, Deni, Conner and Nathan; step grandchildren Chase, Evan (Raquel) and Tyler; step great-granddaughter Chloe; and a great-grand baby on the way.
The family thanks Health Essentials Hospice for their exceptional care and family support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson’s Research – www.michaeljfox.org.
Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 20, 2015 at Our Mother of Confidence, 3131 Governor Drive, San Diego, CA 92122 at 10:30 a.m. A private internment at Miramar National Cemetery will be at a later date.
