Welby, Edward A. of San Diego, CA (formerly of Quincy, MA), passed away on September 5, 2025. Beloved husband of Karyn (Coveney) Welby of San Diego, CA (formerly of Dorchester, MA). Most devoted and loving father of Claire, Grace, Cassidy, and Maeve Welby of San Diego, CA. Cherished brother of the late Lisa Welby-Gusmini of Holliston, MA, Linda Welby-Bunn and her husband Austin of San Diego, CA, Jean Peugh of San Diego, CA, Joan Gillespie and her husband Donald of Scituate, MA, and Joseph Welby and his wife Alicia of Scituate, MA. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and co-workers.
Eddie was born to the late Edward J. and Ruth M. Welby on December 31, 1971 in South Boston, MA, and was raised in Quincy, MA. He attended North Quincy High School and graduated in 1990. Even though Eddie was a skilled carpenter by trade and had worked successfully and happily in that capacity for many years, he still went on to get his Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA, and graduated in 1998. After graduation, he worked as a project manager for major construction corporations in St. Louis, MO, Jacksonville, FL, and San Diego, CA. In 2003, he decided to take the leap and start his own small construction business, Welby Construction Management, in San Diego, CA. The commitment, sweat, and tears that he put into this company for the past 20 years were immeasurable. Not only did he do amazing work but he was just so loved by his clients to the point where most of them became some of his closest friends.
Even though Eddie had very long days at the office, he still managed to find the time to be a volunteer coach for the local soccer organization, Pacific Youth Soccer League (PYSL). What initially began as a recreational way for him to spend quality time with his second oldest daughter, Grace, turned into an eight-year commitment, with him moving up to coaching competitively at the club level and joining the league’s board. He found so much joy in teaching kids the game of soccer and loved being fully involved in giving back to the soccer community.
Although he was such a hard worker and really enjoyed coaching soccer, nothing could compare to the love and dedication that he had for his family, especially for his four beautiful daughters: Claire, Grace, Cassidy, and Maeve. They were his whole world and he would say that his greatest accomplishment in life was being their father.
Eddie will be remembered as a truly one-of-a-kind, loyal, compassionate, generous, and devoted family man and friend whose laughter and playful smile could light up a room. He will be forever loved and so greatly missed.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family on Saturday, September 13th between 11:00am–12:30pm at the Beardsley-Mitchell Funeral Home, 1818 Sunset Cliffs Blvd, San Diego, CA. A funeral mass will then be held at 1:00pm at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 2802 Cadiz Street, San Diego, CA.
The family appreciates all of your loving thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. Your support and kindness will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers and if you feel inclined to do more, please follow the link under "Donations."
