

Born in Batangas, Batangas, Philippines on March 28, 1932, he was the son of Pioquinto Samera and Juliana Cardasto. He graduated Batangas Highschool in 1950. He went on to work as a Public Health worker in Batangas. In 1960, he enlisted into the United States Navy at Sangley Point, Philippine Islands. He received his recruit training at Naval Training Center, San Diego. He served aboard the USS Tom Green, USS America, USS Coral Sea, USS Enterprise and Naval Construction Battalion THREE also known as the Sea Bees. While on the USS Enterprise, he was one of the injured during the explosion in 1969, where a rocket was accidently detonated. His shore duty tours included MS “B” school in San Diego; Builder “A”, “C”, and “J” Schools at Port Hueneme, California; 31st Naval Construction Regiment, Port Hueneme, California; Public Works Naval Communication Station, Asmara, Ethiopia, Africa; Public Works, Naval Air Station, Albany, Georgia and Public Works Department, Naval Air Station, Miramar. Throughout his 20 year career his performance of duty has been noteworthy and been officially recognized by awards of the Navy Unit Commendation Medal (two awards), Good Conduct Medal (five awards), National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (four awards), Vietnam Campaign medal with Device, Battle Efficiency Medal and Excellence “E” Award. He retired from active duty in 1980 and transferred over to the Fleet Reserve where he worked in the Public Works Department for the United Stated Navy in San Diego. He was forced into retirement after a heart attack in 1992 and undergoing bypass surgery.
He belonged to Good Shepherd Catholic Parish and was involved in the Cursillo group. He was also an active member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed carpentry, gardening and working on cars. He received an AS degree in Auto Mechanics from San Diego City College in 1987. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle heart. He was a loving brother, husband, father and grandfather. He was always happy and willing to help neighbors or friends out whether it be with repairs on their home or tools that they needed to borrow.
He is survived by his spouse Juanita Samera, his daughters, Ernestina Watt and Renita Samera, grandchildren Brianna and Daniel Watt and his sister Felisa Samera.
