George W. Roos, a devoted family man, U.S. Navy veteran, respected aerospace executive, and passionate community volunteer, passed away peacefully Saturday morning at the age of 92 surrounded by family.
George was born in Yonkers, NY, to George and Corinne Roos. George attended Regis High School, a Catholic boy’s school in New York City. He then attended Iona University in New York where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics. It was during his college years where he met his future wife, Grace Lennon (Roos).
Shortly after graduating from Iona University George enlisted in the United States Navy where he graduated from Officer Candidate School. He served as a division officer and then Executive Officer on the minesweeper USS Phoebe from 1954-1957. His time in the service instilled in him a deep sense of duty, discipline, and commitment – values that guided him throughout his life.
After his miliary service, George began a distinguished career with General Dynamics. He started as a Program Manager at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, CT. After marrying Grace in 1958 they settled in Old Saybrook, CT. It was here where they started their family and had four boys - George, Jack, Ted and Dan.
In 1977 George transitioned to the Fort Worth, Texas, division of General Dynamics and became the Director of Resource Management where he worked on logistics in support of the F-16 fighter aircraft. In 1979 he was transferred to the Convair Division of General Dynamics in San Diego as the Director of Integrated Logistic Support where he worked on the Tomahawk Cruise Missile program. During his time with General Dynamics he rose to the position of Vice President of Human Resources before retiring in 1993. His leadership and vision over the years played a key role in advancing major aerospace and defense initiatives during a pivotal era in the industry.
In retirement George served as the Director of SANDARC, a non-profit entity promoting Amateur Radio as a community resource. He also volunteered his time at his local library where he handled the finances associated with the used book store associated with the library. The used book store was later renamed Grace’s Booknook in honor of his wife Grace. He was also instrumental in launching a book drive that delivered thousands of books to schools and underserved communities on Fanning Island, an atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. George was also an avid Organ player and would frequently play at various organ venues throughout San Diego County.
In 2004 after the Navy turned over the USS Midway to the city of San Diego to serve as a museum ship George was selected to be on the initial Board of Directors which he proudly served on for 8 years. George loved volunteering his time on the USS Midway by helping to preserve naval history and honor those who served. He especially enjoyed inviting friends and family to attend the annual Midway American Patriot Award Gala.
George was predeceased by his wife Grace (2007) and second wife Dorothy (2014). George is survived by his beloved wife Judy, sons (and daughter-in-laws) George (Janet), Jack (Staci), Ted (Ginny) and Dan (Laura) as well as six grandchildren. George’s life was defined by service – to his country, his work, and his community – and he leaves behind a legacy of dedication, compassion, and impact. George will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
A memorial service will be held at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 9th from 10:00 to 11:30. A reception will immediately follow in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Midway Museum or to international education charities in George’s honor.
