Gilbert was the oldest of five children born to the late Robert D. Roberts Sr. and Helen D. Roberts.
As a member of a military family Gilbert traveled a great deal. The family lived in many places including Guantanamo Bay Cuba before deciding to make San Diego, California their forever home.
On February 25, 1969, Gilbert enlisted in the United States Army and was part of 14th Calvary Regiment. Gilberts primary job was as a Petroleum Supply Specialist. While enlisted, he received training in Air Maintenance. Gilbert served in the Vietnam war and received the Oversees Service Bar for his lengthy service. During his military service Gilbert was awarded 4 medals. These medals included the National Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Army Commendation Medal. Gilbert was an expert level marksman and specialized in the M14 and M16 rifle. His final duty station was in Fort Dixon, New Jersey.
Upon leaving the Army in 1971 Gilbert became interested in construction, becoming an apprentice and later foreman. In 1993 Gilbert became a certified General Contractor and went into business for himself. He could build anything from furnishings to homes. Gilbert rebuilt a Southeast San Diego neighborhood mainstay, Dr. J’s. Gilbert designed the blueprint for New Paradise Baptist Church also in San Diego.
Gilbert never met a stranger and no party was complete until he had arrived. He had a love for music and could often be found on the dance floor dancing the day or night away.
Eventually, Gilbert would meet the woman that he would spend the rest of his life with, Tina Nolan. Together they would build a beautiful partnership that spanned 14 years. Their love and devotion for one another shined brightly. Tina was his constant, his soulmate and his heart’s song.
