

Howard was a resident of San Diego, CA since 1967. A native Californian, he was born September 4, 1929 and passed away September 1, 2021 at the age of 91. He was the beloved husband of 52 years to the late Lucille S. Brotman. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kita (Lesley) Rose. Howard will be deeply missed by his children, Ellen Sawyer and Amy (Roger) Putty. He will be forever remembered by his grandchildren, Savannah Rose, Alex (Eun Hye) Brotman, Grant Sawyer, Rachel and Scott (Kristiana) Putty and great-grandchildren Lani and Reina Brotman. Howard is survived by his brother, Alan (Phyllis) Brotman. He will be missed by his love, for the past fourteen years, Mamie Sororkin.
Howard was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA and attended UCLA earning a degree in accounting. While at UCLA, he met Lucille Schullman and they married on May 28, 1952. The Army called and Howard and Lucille moved to Fort Ord, Monterey, CA. After earning his CPA degree, they relocated to Las Vegas, NV to start a family. In 1967, Howard was offered a partnership position at the accounting firm of Laventhol and Horwath in San Diego, CA, and moved his family to Pacific Beach. Howard retired from Laventhol and Horwath in 1985, then decided to spend his “retirement” as the CFO at San Diego National Bank.
Always a humanitarian, Howard devoted his life to his community and chaired for numerous organizations, including Temple Beth Israel, United Way of San Diego, Council of Jewish Federations, National Conference of Christians and Jews – San Diego, B’nai B’rith Council – San Diego, Vista Hill Foundation, San Diego Hebrew Homes, and United Jewish Federation of San Diego County.
Howard loved travel and was a life-long learner, taking courses at UCSD until his mid-eighties. He would go to the beach and zoo with his family often and volunteered his time as an ambassador at the San Diego Zoo. He would humor his family and attend Padre games and was a huge San Diego Chargers fan.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 5, 2021, at 1:00pm, El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA 92121.
