February 27, 1925 - May 26, 2019
On Sunday afternoon surrounded by family, at the age of 94, our beloved mother passed away peacefully at home. Though her mobility had declined considerably over the preceding few months her mind was as sharp as ever, and her sense of humor was intact. Fortunately, she was able to receive communion the day before from Rev. Wheelock of St. Andrew’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church.
The third of four children, she was born in Linden, N.J. to Helen Ott Midgley and Edward Midgley. Early in life she displayed her creative skills. She excelled in sewing and drawing. In the 1930’s she traveled twice by steamer with her parents to Sumatra where her father worked for Dutch Standard Oil. She even hosted a tapeworm on one visit! Back in New Jersey she graduated a year early from North Plainfield High School, and her yearbook shows that she was a popular and accomplished student. It is no surprise that with the outbreak of WW II she joined the Navy WAVES and became a LINK instrument instructor. Fortunately, for those of us who owe everything to her, she met a handsome young pilot, the remarkable Hugh “Bo” Baumann. They married May 11, 1946.
She excelled at the role of Naval Officer’s Wife working in Navy Relief, Girl Scouts, Bridge Club, and, most importantly, raised five attractive and well-behaved children. She did this while moving to new duty stations every 1-3 years, with Hugh being absent on multiple carrier deployments and gone the better part of a year each time.
Following Hugh’s retirement the empty-nesters traveled frequently, and with her new found free time she delved into her artistic talent. She delighted her family with hand painted watercolor postcards mailed from all over the world. Her many beautiful and clever watercolors are both art and history. Sadly, Hugh Baumann, Capt., USN, ret. preceded her in death in 1996.
She is sorely missed by sons James and Peter (Laura), daughters Denise (James Mahoney), Leslie, and Nancy (Paul Regan); and grandchildren Annie Mahoney, and Ariana, Skyler, Brayden and Ilyrea Baumann.
Funeral arrangements by Pacific Beach Mortuary.
