James “Michael” Welch was born on July 18, 1971, at Balboa Naval Hospital, in San Diego, CA. He is the only son of George E. Welch and Donna L. Welch. At birth, there was no question that he was going to be memorable with that fiery red hair. Once he was brought home to his 4 siblings, it was apparent that though they had been a big factor in choosing his name, they just couldn’t ever get used to calling him James; hence, “Michael, Mike, Mikey” was born. In his adult life, his James persona came to life and the miracle of James’ Christian spirit and love for all began. Whether you knew him as Michael or as James, knowing him undoubtedly has forever changed your life for the better.
Michael lived the majority of his life in the Clairemont and Kearny Mesa area. He graduated from Madison High School, attending Grossmont College, and California College of San Diego (Medical Specialties). As a young man, he was very involved in the local DeMolay group, where he made lifelong friendships. He worked in a variety of fields, from Rock-105 FM to AAA Automotive. He was very involvement in the Rock Church in Point Loma and as a very strong advocate of the AA program and sober living. The relationships he developed through involvement in these programs are to be admired and will be greatly missed by many and anyone he came in contact with was likely to be spoken to with loving conviction on any of these subjects.
The family would like to thank all of his friends, old and some very new, for the love and affection that was shown to Michael, as well as the family during the very difficult past 9 months since his diagnosis. Also, we would like to thank the countless visitors that came to see him in the hospice. Fortunately, the family was able to meet many of his extended family members during this time. We always knew he was a gentle loving person, we just didn’t know how many others knew it as well. Our family feels blessed. This incredible support has helped us let go of him to the Father with complete understanding, faith and joy for him.
Michael is survived by his parents, George E Welch & Donna L Welch, 4 siblings, Barbara Robinson, Sheila Remers, Roberta Clint, & Douglas Witcher. Also surviving Michael, are 12 nieces and nephews, 12 (+2 on the way) Great nieces and nephews, and 1 Great-Great niece.
