Jean Ferris was my favorite author since the fourth grade. I remember the day I won Once upon a marigold at a book walk in my school's carnival. I sat down with it and I couldn't stop reading! I finished it right around the time Twice upon a marigold came out. The wait for the third book killed me.One night I was out to eat with my family when someone told me that she had passed away. I was in the sixth grade at this time. I started freaking out and I had to step outside. I later found out that it was a false alarm.Only a few months later, she released thrice upon a marigold. It was 3 am when I found out, and I called my mom to tell her the news.I reread all three of these books from time to time, and I hope to pass them down to my kids. They hold a very special place in my heart. It has been five years since I discovered her. I really can't believe she is gone.

What an admirable woman Jean was. Her photo caught my eye immediately because I took it. It was over our front gate. She wanted something friendlier for the book she was currently working on. We had done studio ones in the past. She was very modest about her profession and I had no idea of the awards she had garnered. I had wondered often if she was still writing and how she was doing. I am so very sorry for all of you and your loss. She was such a gracious person and I admired her greatly.  Meredith French
