Jill Anne (Webb) Gergurich, age 76, of Carlsbad, California passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2024. Jill died as she lived, surrounded by the love of the huge, loud, and chaotic family that she created. Her last days were filled with visits from her sister and brother-in-law, her children and children-in-law, and her 31 grandchildren, each of whom she loved with her whole heart.
Jill was born in San Diego, CA, the younger daughter of Ross and Esther Webb, and younger sister to Marilyn. One of the most important moments of her life happened when she was just five years old. Her mother was the cashier in an A&P market in Ocean Beach, which was owned by a family recently moved to San Diego from Butte, Montana. That couple had recently lost a beautiful little red-haired daughter to leukemia, and when Jill first walked into the store, they were struck by the resemblance to their Alice. It was on this day that Jill met Ed, their younger son, and her future husband.
The two families became friends and spent many weekends and holidays together, and Jill often said that all of her early significant memories included Ed. He even taught her to drive when she was sixteen. He then went away to join the Army, and came back after his service to go to college, and saw Jill again after the absence of a few years. At that time, Jill had just been named the first female Head Copy Boy at the San Diego Union, and was thinking of continuing a career in journalism. However, the reunion changed all of that, and they were married after just six months. Then proceeded to have the first of their twelve children almost exactly a year later. Their marriage was a true partnership, and their love and respect for each other was obvious in every interaction. It was a blessing to witness them together, and to get to be part of their story. They remained devoted to each other until Ed's death in 2003, and Jill never stopped being entirely in love with Ed - wearing her wedding rings still, 21 years later, until her own passing.
Jill devoted herself to her children and grandchildren, attending every game, match, meet, recital, Irish dance feis, Christmas Pageant and Grandparent's Day that she could. She taught herself to quilt, having always been a wonderful seamstress, and made quilts for her children, grandchildren, and any baby she met. She was talented in crochet and worked on prayer shawls for the ill and infirm with her sister. And in memory of Ed, she spent time in the garden, growing beautiful plumeria trees to remember the happy times they spent together in Hawaii, their favorite vacation spot.
Jill is preceded in death by her husband Ed, her youngest child, Richard, and her parents and parents-in- law. She is deeply mourned and joyfully remembered by her sister Marilyn Day and brother-in-law Jim, her brother-in-law Jack Gergurich, and by her children Ted (Michelle), Katy (Kenn), James (Michelle), John (Brooke), Andrew (Kelly), Chris (Heidi), Dan (Delanie), Meghan (Joe), Matt (Mary Ann), Ben (Sara), & Beth, and her 31 grandchildren.
A memorial mass for Jill will be held Friday, July 5, 2024, at St Patrick Catholic Church, 3821 Adams St, Carlsbad, CA 92008. Following the memorial mass will be a private inurnment for family members only at Holy Cross Cemetery & Mausoleum, 4470 Hilltop Dr, San Diego, CA 92102.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society or the Edward G. Gergurich Memorial Scholarship Endowment at SDSU School of Accountancy (NO1317). If an address is requested for donation please use 4762 Crater Rim Road Carlsbad, CA, 92010.
