John Louis Cannady was the fifth child born to Ervin and Nazaree Cannady on October 30, 1944, in Holly Bluff, Mississippi. He proudly belonged to a large, loving family, of which two living aunts, Ms. Grace Stewart of Jackson, Mississippi, and Ms. Nancy Moore of St. Louis, Missouri, are still living.
John served in the United States Navy from 1965-1969 aboard the USS Constellation, “Connie”, as he referred to her, where he toured the sea and fought in the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, John worked for the San Diego Transit (also known as JC), currently known as the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), providing service for 42 years.
John was a devoted husband to Leola Cannady. Their courtship began in 1965 and progressed into marriage in 1966. Together, they nurtured three children: Leverne (Wife Evelyn), Pamela (Husband Clarence), and Anthony. Their love story unfolded with grace and strength, building a family filled with care and support, until Leola’s passing on January 22, 2016.
John had a love for the Ford Mustang and his prolific knowledge of the 302 small-block engines. He had a passion for yard work, keeping a neat and enjoyable landscape around his home. He also loved (1) the horse track, (2) the casino with a knack for winning, (3) sports, (football), Chargers fan, (baseball), Padres, and he loved holiday celebrations; and (4) Old School Jams and Jazz music. He loved to travel, specifically visiting his mother and getting together with his brothers and sisters. These trips weren’t just about seeing family; they were a cherished tradition that kept their close-knit bond alive. Recognizing the importance of togetherness, he took the initiative to organize the first official “family reunion”. This event was a significant milestone in our family culture because it brought everyone together under one roof, creating an opportunity for laughter, sharing stories, and strengthening ties that spanned generations. The reunion highlighted the value of family and the happiness of reuniting, regardless of distance.
John’s legacy thrives through his grandchildren, who carry his spirit and values: Queenisha Quinetta Diamond Cannady, Christopher Dejon Cannady, Kevin Valle, Essence Shonte Cannady, Darrick Alexander Cannady, Charity Joy Brown, Justin Alexander Brown, and Christian Clarence Brown. He is also a proud great-grandfather, finding joy in his five beautiful great-grandchildren: Taniiyah Bernice Diamond Guss, Armonni Leola E’Shay Cannady, Tavon Leverne Elijah Cannady, Kiamen Robinson, and Jahkai Cannady.
He also leaves to mourn his siblings: Wesalean Campbell (MS), Clara Neal (MS), Yvonne Green (LA), Ruby Qualls (deceased), Mary Givens (WS), Doris Hill (TX), Roy Cannady (UH), Mattie “Pat” Norris (OH), Dori Adams (WS), Erving Cannady Jr. (TX), Danny Cannady (TX), Clyde Cannady (TX) and Roger Cannady (TX) with a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, friends and cohorts.
John’s family holds dear the memories they created together and continues to celebrate the love and wisdom he shared throughout his life. As “my big brother”, “Uncle John”, “dad’, “papa” (the great-grand-kids called him “old papa), and his beloved wife called him “sweetheart”.
