

He was born in the island of Pico Açores Portugal from the village of Santa Cruz das Rebeiras. To the parents of Manuel Ávila Silveira and Maria Cândida Rodrigues Silveira. They had 6 children, three boys and three girls, he was the second youngest.
Jose studied in the seminary, serviced in the Portuguese military and was a lighthouse keeper.
His first assignment as a lighthouse keeper was in the island of Flores. Then in 1960 at the Farol da Ferreira in Sao Miguel Açores in the village of Ginetes. On a Sunday on his way to church he spotted Julieta who lived in Ginetes. He told someone he was going to marry her. They courted a short time(from the veranda) what was done back then. They later married on September 16th, 1961 They had two children, Maria and Victor, both born in the Farol da Ferreira(lighthouse).
A few years later Jose was reassigned to return to Pico. So he and his young family traveled back to his home island of Pico where he was assigned to the Farol da Ponta da Ilha. Then to later return back to Sao Miguel for almost 2 years.
The family immigrated to the USA in May of 1969, arriving to Fall River Mass. Where they had family. Then later to end up I San Diego CA.
Jose was a hard worker and wanted to provide for his family. The America dream of a better life! He worked at Nassco shipbuilding as a painter for 30 years. Where he made lifetime friendships.
Throughout his life in San Diego he was actively involved in his parish of Saint Agnes, he was a Eucharist minister, devoted to the Eucharist and attended Adoration. He was also very involved in volunteering his time and talents to the Our Lady of Fatima Society organization. He was very devoted to Our Blessed Mother. Every year for the celebration he has to secure the statue of OLF to her base.
Jose is survived by his wife of 63 years, daughter and granddaughter, who he loved very much. Sadly, his son Victor passed in 2001.
Jose is know resting in eternal and everlasting peace, reunited with his beloved son, family and friends.
Our family will not be the same without you. I know we will find comfort in each other.
Rosary and mass in honor of Jose will be celebrated on Saturday, March 22nd starting at 10am at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Point Loma , followed by internment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Eternal and everlasting life grant onto him.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Rady’s Children’s Hospital in San Diego.
A visitation for Jose will be held Friday, March 21, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Beardsley-Mitchell Funeral Home, 1818 Sunset Cliffs Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107. A rosary will occur Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM at St Agnes Catholic Church, 1140 Evergreen St, San Diego, CA 92106. A funeral mass will occur Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at St Agnes Catholic Church, 1140 Evergreen St, San Diego, CA 92106.
