

He was born on July 1, 1934 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the son of Joseph Alexander Black and Janet Elizabeth (Penny) Black.
Joseph served in the U.S. Navy as a heavy equipment mechanic and “Seabee.” He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was stationed at Subic Bay, Philippines in 1953 where he met his wife Consuelo. They later married in Olongapo, Philippines in 1955. He was also stationed in Yokosuka, Japan; Fallon, Nevada; Adak, Alaska and his final station was in Port Hueneme, California where he settled the family in Oxnard, California in 1968. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer, First Class in 1971.
He is survived by his wife Consuelo Black and children Joseph T. Black, III (Jackie), Robert Black (Arlene), John Black (Mary), Maribeth Bradberry (Mike), Paul Black (Maida); grandchildren Sandra Black (Lorena), Byron T. Bartlett, IV ( Leukena), Marissa Bischof (Matt), David Bartlett (Sumra), Danny Black (Leanne), Leilani Black, Keoni Black (Sabrina), Drew Black(Olivia Montes), Troy Black (Junelle), Luke Black, Jude Black, and Faith Black; great-grandchildren Kayli Tibbs, Sega Bartlett, Sophie Bartlett, Sachi Bartlett, Jolei Seymour, Jeidon Seymour, Gavin Black, Frankie Bischof, Lincoln Bischof, Maylea Black, and Cora Black.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Alexander Black and Janet Elizabeth Black; his siblings John Black and Janet Gould; and grandson Michael Christopher Bradberry.
He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Parish, 8200 Gold Coast Drive, San Diego, CA, 92126. The graveside service and internment will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122.
