January 7, 1961 – September 11, 2025
It is with heavy hearts and deep admiration for a life beautifully lived that we announce the passing of Joseph Anthony Tarantino, 64, who entered into eternal rest peacefully at home on September 11, 2025, with his devoted husband, Paul Costa, by his side. Born in San Diego, California, Joseph was the cherished son of Frank and Nina Tarantino, whose families immigrated to the United States from Sant’Elia, a small town near Palermo in Sicily, Italy. Rooted in heritage and faith, Joseph carried the strength and warmth passed down by his parents throughout his life.
Joseph and Paul’s love story began in high school – a bond that blossomed into a remarkable partnership spanning 46 joyful years. Their relationship was a testament to enduring love, shared laughter, and unwavering support, and it remained the heart of Joseph’s life until his final breath.
Joseph Anthony Tarantino was beautiful inside and out. His warm, radiant smile and the ever-present twinkle in his eye reflected a soul full of joy, love, and light. His laughter was infectious, a melody that lifted spirits and brought people together. But above all, Joseph’s most defining trait was his huge heart: vast, generous, and overflowing with kindness. He lived each day with a joy that radiated from within, touching everyone fortunate enough to cross his path. Joseph also had a rare and extraordinary gift for compassion. He saw the good in people instinctively, and his belief in the beauty of the human spirit was unwavering.
Music was the language of his soul. Whether spinning his favorite vinyl records or blasting tunes from his Bose speaker, Joseph was always singing, dancing, and inviting others to join in the celebration – to watch him dance with his family was to witness someone fully alive – immersed in love, laughter, and the sheer delight of being present. He celebrated life in all its forms – finding happiness in the simplest moments and sharing that happiness freely. Whether through a spontaneous dance, a heartfelt conversation, or a quiet act of generosity, Joseph made the world feel warmer, more joyful, and more hopeful.
Joseph’s faith was the foundation of his life. His devotion to Jesus, Our Lady of Fatima, and St. Anthony was deep and unwavering. It shaped his character – kind, humble, compassionate, and full of hope. He radiated the peace of someone who knew he was deeply loved by God. Even in the face of illness, when told by multiple doctors that he had only hours to live, Joseph responded with serene faith: “You know… I’m in God’s hands.” He then went on to defy the odds, living another month filled with love, laughter, and precious time with those he cherished. Joseph’s legacy is one of love, joy, and faith. He will be profoundly missed, but his spirit – his light – will continue to shine in the hearts of all who loved him.
Joseph is survived by his husband, Paul Costa, his sisters Tillie Battaglia (John) and Anna Randall (Kevin) and his brother Frank Tarantino (Peter) all of San Diego – he also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who adored him. He was preceded in death by his dear sister Francine Korch and his cherished parents Frank and Nina Tarantino. May our beloved Joseph rest in eternal peace, embraced by the light of heaven, and joyfully reunited with those who went before him.
A mass service to honor Joseph’s life will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 11:00 am. All who wish to gather to honor Joseph’s life are warmly welcome to attend the service. In keeping with Joseph’s personal wishes, the gathering following the Mass will be reserved for immediate family only.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Joseph’s deep love for animals – as was so beautifully reflected in his adoration of his two cherished Pomeranians, Zorro and Lola – donations may be made in his memory to The Animal Pad through Joseph’s Memorial Page: (https://givebutter.com/JosephTarantino).
