
Joseph Verga, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and legendary tuna fishing captain, passed away peacefully at home on April 5, 2026, surrounded by his devoted family.
Joseph was born on August 28, 1931, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, to Domenic Verga and Giovanina Verga. He attended St. Ann Grammar School and Gloucester High School, where he grew up immersed in the rich fishing traditions of his hometown. From an early age, Joseph found his calling on the water, beginning a lifelong passion for fishing. In 1946, he proudly earned recognition as a Greasy Pole winner, a testament to his determination and spirit.
He went on to serve his country honorably as a member of the United States Navy. After his service, Joseph moved to San Diego, California, where he became a highly respected “highliner” tuna fishing captain. Over the course of his career, he captained large tuna vessels across some of the most beautiful tropical destinations in the world. Known for his skill, leadership, and deep knowledge of the sea, he earned a legendary reputation among his peers and crews.
Outside of his life at sea, Joseph enjoyed time on the golf course and was known as an avid golfer. More importantly, he was a man who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was deeply loved and widely respected, remembered for his strength, character, and the warmth he shared with others.
Joseph is survived by his loving son, Joseph Verga; his grandson, Darren Verga Jr.; his great-granddaughters, Reiley Verga and Delnaz Verga; his daughter-in-law, Hoonoosh Verga; his sister, Nina Francis; and his sister-in-law, Rosie Verga.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Paula Verga; his son, Darren Verga; his sisters, Frances Carcia and Grace Scola; and his brothers, Salvatore, James, Philip, and Anthony Verga, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joseph Verga will be remembered as a devoted family man, a proud veteran, and a true legend of the sea. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he loved so deeply.
