I am soooo thankful to JESUS for my incredibly loving, encouraging, and influential Mom, Kathryn Jane Fox!!!

In San Diego, Mom and Dad teamed up to run a  highly successful CPA and Bookkeeping practice in Solana Beach. Dad handled the high-end CPA stuff and Mom was a jack/“jill” of all trades, from being  office manager to being head bookkeeper and other roles as well.. 

I also remember her having, almost all the time, a cheerful attitude, except for those occasional times when we (or I’ll speak for myself) deserved something less than her normal cheerfulness.

Mom was a classic New Yorker with straightforward frankness and kindness. Frankly, she begat in me, an extreme loyalty towards her. Truly, growing up, I could never imagine a better Mother in the whole world. I was truly blessed beyond my wildest dreams by a Mom who was most certainly unsurpassed in our hearts and minds. As the song goes (and I believe my Dad could sing it well!),”Thanks for the Memories!”

Because both my Dad and my Mom came into a solid Biblical faith in Christ during their lifetimes, I believe they’re both in heaven now with Jesus, the Father, the Holy Spirit, and the angels! The Bible tells us there is no marriage in heaven. However, I still can imagine my Dad and Mom slow dancing to a Frank Sinatra type song as the “class act” they’ve always been. Thanks for everything, Mom! I’m so grateful for everything you did for me and I greatly anticipate seeing you in heaven someday!

Mom was always a dog lover. The first dog the family had was a cute little blonde cocker spaniel named Bonnie, that sadly got irretrievably lost one day. We then had another dog named Topsie, who was a cute little black mutt that had a lot of scraggly hair, especially hanging over his eyes. Years later we had a fun and speedy dog named Lady who was part doberman pinscher. Whenever Mom was asked what kind of dog we had, she would say, “Oh, it’s a Siberian Cheesehound”… meaning it was a mixed mongrel or mutt. Very funny!

Mom and Dad were very gracious and very giving. They gave us just about everything we needed, and also many things we wanted. As I mentioned, Mom was an unsurpassed encourager who we innately wanted to please. And we knew that we did please her, because of her unconditional love.
   
Mom achieved her undergraduate degree from Adelphi University and a Masters in English from Queens College. Mom met her future husband, Thomas Kenney Fox, on the train ride in Queens on the way to college.

Mom was very intelligent (as was Dad!). Being an avid reader, she also seemed to be a speed reader, well before the concept was known or pursued.  I wouldn’t be surprised, though I never asked her, if she read two to three books per week. It wasn’t until I received Christ and committed my life to Him, that I, too, became a voracious (though not as fast) reader, beginning with The Holy Bible and branching out into many subjects.

Mom and Dad introduced us to so many unique experiences, from ice skating to snowmobiling, to deep sea fishing, golf, swimming, and all kinds of sports competition. We had lacrosse sticks, a pool table, a ping pong table, a slot car course and many other blessings. Mom was a key element in our moves from Brookville, Long Island, in 1969 to Syracuse, and then to Philadelphia, in 1971 and later on to San Diego, Calif.

My beloved Mom, Mrs. Kathryn Jane Fox was the best Mom in the whole wide world! She knew how to laugh. She knew how to cry. She knew how to be patient. And, rarely, she knew how to yell… I, as one of her sons acknowledge that I needed her patience very much and deserved to be yelled at on occasion. LOL! Mom was always encouraging, especially about our sports involvement which were extensive. o always had high standards for us and always thought the best of us and the best for us, whether it was in academics, sports, friends, etc. Mom would always be reading a book, primarily novels. She achieved a Masters Degree in English Literature and was a substitute teacher in several of her sons’ high schools. She set a tremendously high example of being a hard worker which we may always aspire to, even if we don’t achieve the same level of diligence. Mom was an excellent Mother of five sons, an excellent housewife, professional, and athlete in her own right.

All the Fox family were high level athletes, and Mom was no exception! Mom was an exceptionally rare and great long distance swimmer. Nearly every Monday each summer, the whole Fox family (except Dad would be working in the city) would travel to Jones Beach on the south shore of Long Island. At some point in the day, Mom would go long distance swimming way out beyond the breakers and swim east to west and then west to east. We could barely see her as a distant “dot” on the horizon, apparently with zero fear of, shall I say, “large fish.” There would be absolutely no one (including her sons) swimming anywhere near her at the time. One of Mom’s swimming exploits was, as a young girl, swimming the five miles across Budd Lake. Also, Mom’s father, Thomas “Pop Pop” Vorbach, would take his young daughter to the then clean Hudson River, near the city, for long distance swims.


Although Kathryn (Mom) spent almost half her life in Solana Beach; you couldn't take the "New Yorker" from her spirit!  She was confident, decisive and lived her life in faith not fear.  She was a romantic at heart and loved her years being married.  She especially loved to see her children and grandchildren happy and in love.  It's what gave her the most joy.  Her perseverance for living a life of mobility was admirable as she always believed a body in motion stays in motion.  However, I most treasure our one-on-one time together over the last six years.  As we attended appointments or enjoyed lunch or dinner, she shared her life stories, her dreams and the never ending love she had for her entire family.  She loved me like a daughter, not a daughter-in-law.  I will miss her resilient spirit, her smile, her love of all things HGTV and her willingness to accept me just the way I am.

You always knew that the best part of any and ALL meals was the dessert!  
As you said:  "If it wasn't chocolate - it didn't count."

I can only imagine you are now enjoying all your Heavenly desserts.

Grandma and I were both Kappa Alpha Thetas. I always loved talking to her and being around her. She took all her grandchildren and our parents to Disney World - it was such a fun trip! She was always so happy at weddings and when she could see her family! She is a wonderful lady who will be missed!
