Lorraine is survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends, former students, and colleagues.
Born the youngest of 17 children, Lorraine grew up in Rochester, NY in a large, loving family where resilience and compassion were essential – and she carried those values throughout her life. From humble beginnings, she went on to achieve great things, earning a doctorate in nursing and dedicating her career to the healing profession.
Lorraine was not only a highly respected nurse, actively involved with the nursing association and became Associate Director of the School of Nursing. She was a passionate mentor to students in nursing programs, where she guided and inspired countless future healthcare professionals with her wisdom, grace, and steady presence. She was known for her level-headedness, even in the most challenging situations – an invaluable trait in both her personal and professional life.
Lorraine embraced every opportunity for growth and adventure. She was involved in politics and worked for progress and civility. She learned to play the guitar, traveled widely, and actively participated in 5K and 10K races, proving that age was never a barrier to living fully. Whether exploring new places or encouraging those around her, she lived her life with quiet determination and a generous spirit.
She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and her quick wit, her intelligence, humility and deep care for others – a woman who led by example and lived with purpose.
A Celebration of Life to honor Lorraine’s life and legacy will be held on Monday, September 15, 2025 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Pacific Beach-La Jolla Chapel at 4710 Cass Street, San Diego, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made in her memory to the American Nursing Association, American Lung Association or Arthritis Foundation.
Lorraine Freitas lived 90 remarkable years, and her influence will be felt for generations to come.
